Great piece. This is such an important topic.

I was diagnosed with fine motor skill issues when I was I was in kindergarten (about 30 years ago).

Back then they did not know why I had poor fine motor skills. It can be very distracting and isolating, and make it difficult to pick up hobbies. Teachers became frustrated because I could not copy the movements the other kids could, or hold a pencil correctly.

Since then, I've been through the gamut of different disorders. Now I know that my fine motor skills were impacted by a lot of things, like generalized joint hyper-mobility and binocular vision dysfunction. I find this article encouraging, and it provides great suggestions for helping kids with fine motor skill issues.

For parents, I would encourage you to find out what is behind the fine motor dysfunction, because it is often something that can be mitigated and improved with intervention and a lot of practice.
